Joy Division
Questions like "what's your favourite colour?" and "what's your favourite film?" really get me. I can be a moody person and I'm happy with that. Why should society dictate that feeling good one day and bad the next means people are subject to "mood swings" and labelled as nutters? LOL. Today it was sunny and then it "chucked it down" with rain. That's how I can feel too. Changing with the weather and the seasons is totally natural. It's the ones who don't, won't, can't change that you have to be wary of...
So one day blue is cool, the next it might be black :)
Anyway... If there was going to be a "favourite band" I really think that Joy Division would be the ones. Of all the people whose passing we lament; Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Marc Boland, Bob Marley, Freddie Mercury, Kurt Cobain - they are all big stars and they're dead. I miss all of these artists because they were bone fide geniuses (genii?), great musicians and reallly interesting people too. Unfortunately I managed to miss ALL of them in concert.
But what about Ian Curtis?
Ian Curtis was the frontman of Joy Division, a band originally formed as "Warsaw" soon after a Sex Pistols gig and later named Joy Division, after Karol Cetinsky's novel "The House of Dolls" about women kept in concentration camps for the pleasure of on-leave Nazi officers in World War II.
Joy Division grew out of the punk scene and got labelled post-punk - but they were a genuine and massively influential band. Look at who has covered their work - Bush, The Cure, Nine Inch Nails, Primal Scream, Simple Minds...
...not to mention New Order who are Joy Division minus Ian Curtis.
I still have a major soft spot for Joy Division. I got into them as a young tape-swapping teenager and probably still have have some bootlegs somewhere - Efenaar, Eindhoven anyone?
I remember stuffing my headphones on and turning Joy Division up full blast rather than having to listen to Slim Whitman, Charlie Pride and "Those you have Loved" on those 4 hour car journies to see the relatives. But rather than stay with us, Ian Curtis took his own life on 18 May 1980.
So if you're still wandering who the hell Ian Curtis is and what all the fuss is about then why is anyone thinking of casting Jude Law in the upcoming Joy Division film?
The Best collection of Joy Division work is on the "Heart & Soul" boxed set - 4x CDs and a book of history and discography too.

"Dead Souls" - Joy Division
Someone take these dreams away,
That point me to another day,
A duel of personalities,
That stretch all true reality.
And keep calling me.
They keep calling me.
Keep on calling me.
They keep calling me.
When figures from the past stand tall,
And mocking voices ring the hall,
Imperialistic house of prayer,
Conquistadores who took their share.
And keep calling me.
They keep calling me.
Keep on calling me.
They keep calling me.
x2 Calling me, calling me.
They keep calling me.
Keep on calling me.
x2 They keep calling me.

I can't beleive there are no comments here - I have always loved Joy Division - btw, you forgot GVSB for covers... they do a massive version of 'She's Lost Control' - I know what you meant by the New Order comment but, fac 50 is about as Joy Division as New Order gets... Sucks being too young to have seen the great ones - I did see New Order a couple times but I was still jamming the Kinks in 1980..... and I was 11.

Cool recommendation, ts, that's GVSB on the music list too.
Right on about that first LP, just put in on again. That's the power of international influence & inspiration. Cheers ;) Still like most of New Order's other stuff and even got a copy of "Twisted Tenderness" by Electronic - a collaboration Barney Sumner did with Johnny Marr, ex-The Smiths... there's always a time and a place to listen to that. Even if a CD or LP is rarely listened to, I hang on to it incase I may ever want to hear it again, even just to think "that's crap" or "why did I ever pay for that" - not saying that about Electronic, but you know what I mean.
Music has a lot of nostalgic power - you know when and where you were when you heard it. Or maybe not. Too drunk sometimes...
Just got a copy of the book "Touching from a Distance - Ian Curtis and Joy Division" by Deborah Curtis - I've been meaning to buy it for years, but only just got around to it. I think that'll be good to read stuff from her perspective - like the back cover says "The only in-depth biographical account of the legendary lead singer of Joy Division, written by his widow"

won't Law just ruin the film?.. I think they need someone more obscure. and therefore more real=)

Lola: Hey Lola, welcome :) That's an interesting point. Law would still do the Ian Curtis role well IMHO but yes, he *may* be too big for the role. I don't know. Some randomly suitable unknown kid from Macclesfield may be far more appropriate. If they were mostly unknowns with just a few cameo appearances that would be very in keeping with the spirit of what most people remember of Joy Division :) Waddya reckon? Any minor list actors you have in mind for the role?

yeh, the box set is really good but i think unknown pleasures is the best thing they've done. the film does look like it has potential to be ok but who knows...
do any of you like xiu xiu or interpol? i think they are both VERY influenced by joy division. interpol are quite mainsteam but xiu xiu are still, i think, reletivly unknown.

Tom Violence:Hey Tom Violence, welcome :) Yeah, we're cool here, personal and not personal all at the same time - work that one out LOL
The box set got everything, for me, together in one place - I had tapes and bootlegs and vinyl years ago, but to have the essential JOy Division stuff in one set with a decent bio too, was too much to miss out on :)
The Ian Curtis Film? Thx for the remind, must go see if there's any updates... it has GOT to be good... or else ;)
Interpol are good, BBFK played me some, but Xiu Xiu I've not heard of before, will be keeping an ear open for them, though their site's not currently playing sound... :(
Thx for the tip, TV, see you soon :)
