Look at this huge pair of

Binoculars
This particular pair of binoculars are 13x70 with a zoom to 36x70 and night vision optics so, although you can't see in total darkness like infra-red goggles, you can see in low light conditions.I was going to go for a pair of 8x30 binoculars or even some 10x50s, but when these 13-36x70s came up at the right price I grabbed a pair :)
The detail on the surface of a full moon is great on full zoom but with the magnification a tripod is definately advisable.
Looking forward to doing some plane spotting when the Farnborough Airshow comes round again. In the meantime they shall be gathering dust.
Buy binoculars, they're fun :D

Hehe, keep us posted on your binocular activity, Rebekah, could make for interesting blogging... just imagine, Hitchcock's "Rear Window" for the 21st century. That film is over 50 years old now, must see it again. Thx for the inspiration ;)
Those binoculars cost less than $50 - absolute bargain and better magnification than a monocle too. So what are 2x monocles called...?

Mine have good zoom. Very good zoom. Except I moved rooms recently and then I stopped being opposite people I knew. So now its just me and the guy who grows tomatoes.

Hehe, that is a Huge Pair!
I could do with buying some new noculars as the last pair I had fell off the shelf and fell apart! But I'm not sure I need such a high-power - but then again you never know...

Seffy, you're in a good position now to keep an eye on that guy... "Growing tomatoes" could all be a cover for producing other "cash crops"... Be sure to report back on any unusual behaviour ;)
Hey Davinian, always better to have a big pair than wish you had bigger LOL think of all the uses within the field of Fortean Zoology... Awesome... Mongolian Death Worms at full zoom... whoah !!
Good stuff, Brom-man; My YOC days should really be upgraded to RSPB so I can offset the guilt of the two moggies I have raised for the last 5/6 years.
Keep your eyes open for these binoculars on eBay. They are cheap and cheerful but it beats paying $300 for a 'decent' pair.

Hey pepper, here's a set... the Chinese copies aren't so hot but still usable nonetheless, whereas these Japanese ones... well I don't know. The Chinese binoculars tend to go out of focus when you zoom in, so they're really just a set of optical components that work, but not quite the way they should.
There's a guy in Kilmarnock who advertises a lot on eBay, but charges GBP60 for (what I think are) the Chinese binoculars.
Best advice I can give is see if you can get your hands on a pair of good and/or bad binoculars before purchase and see if they suit your needs. The usual brands will set you back about GBP150+ so if you can handle occasional use for 'a few quid' then the choice is made :)
