Media Player stole my WinAmp

MS MediaPlayer's an arrogant 'little' program isn't it?

In the red corner - MS MediaPlayerIn the blue corner - Nullsoft's WinAmpYesterday I attempted some very basic video editing and, as a result ended up 'having to' upgrade to MediaPlayer 10. After install/upgrade I skipped through the nag boxes and now, when I slot a music disc in the drive, no longer is there a selection of programs to choose from... my weapon of choice is always WinAmp (WinAmp lite version because it doesn't hog valuable system resources :) but now the MS usurper has taken over.

Having tried to set program access and defaults has so far proved unsuccessful... the system doesn't even recognise WinAmp as being installed as an alternative option for media playback. I will look into this later when there's more time to demote the parasite back to its rightful place.

Sympathies Lever. I had a similar problem a while back, but not, I think, with the same version of Media Player. I managed to get the file associations sorted, (I'm using win98). I love Winamp, I use the older version, like your screenshot, and it does everything I need it to. My PC I use exclusively for music has loads of MP3s on it and I use the "shuffle" on Winamp as a substitute for the radio when I'm doing things around the house. It's strange, it appears to have "moods" one day it will hardly play a long track, sometimes it will miss out one particular band completely even tho' there are several CD's worth on the drive. Nothing to do with genre settings, as I have been too lazy to type in the index. Anyhows, I'm very sure you'll sort it!

Thanks Brom-man, it will be sorted and it shouldn't take too long, when I get a spare moment or two :)

The cheek of the software though; it's politely invited in and then sits down and helps itself to everything. Bad software - Beatdown with my digital slipper :D

hehe, i had to reinstall it a few days ago.
i guess you missed the file type association settings while installing it, its pretty easy to miss.

wmp is indeed bloaty, winamp is good, another software thats even more resource stingy is foobar2000.

personally i dont even use the damned piece of software that is wmp10, i just installed it so i can get some wmv files working. for all other video files i use media player classic.

    yay for free software!

Right on, anonymous brother/sister :D The freebies often break the concept of "you get what you pay for", and I like that.

Yep, spot on, I did skim throught the file type association on install :) Had my "yeah, yeah, yeah" head on. DoH !!
