Parkour, Free Running - "Jump Britain"

Thursday night, Channel 4 showed an hour long documentary entitled "Jump Britain" (buy the Jump Britain DVD or the Jump London DVD) about the rise of Parkour, or the sport of Free Running. Great programme and an interesting sport with the co-founder, Sebastien Foucan, and a bunch of British guys doing some amazing moves.

Parkour, Free RunningThe basic premise of Parkour is free running, jumping and moving in fluid ways with the environment and a lot of the guys doing Parkour on Jump Britain were climbing up walls, jumping over obstacles, rolling, balancing, vaulting in the most sublime ways, checking out the urban environment to see ways of using rails, gates, walls, pillars etc to perform some interesting manouevres; a bit like skateboarding without the board.
Anyway, the main feature of the show was these people doing their thing across Britain - free running the Giants Causeway in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, Edinburgh Castle in Scotland, the Bull Ring, Birmingham, Tyne Bridge, Newcastle, and Festival Hall, London amongst other national landmarks.

Last time I did a big jump was over a hedge and onto a busted concrete path - twisted my ankle LOL (and don't mention the BMX jump last year where I bit the dirt and chipped my shin bone in the process. Now I have 661 pads - just the job)

There's no doubt people will get into this parkour/free running thing because it's the new cool bandwagon to be jumped on, but just like BMX and skateboarding are cool, owning a board or BMX does not equal cool. Like BMX and skateboarding this is another sport that requires practice, skill, style and discipline.

There's some good info about on Parkour or Free Running, like the Urban FreeFlow Global Parkour Network and the UK Parkour Association. Don't know if it's for me, though, still need to get tricky with my bikes first :)

parkour, funny name, free running sounds better.
i remeber me and probably plenty of other kids used to do this all the time, jumping and vaulting over fences bollards, steps walls, you name it, if you could step on it or grab it, then the last thing you did was to walk over it. and the hardest part was making it look effortless and fluid, just as if it was as naturaland second nature as walking.

like you i had a bit of a fall, went over a wall hands first trying to get my feet highest off the ground, without knowing what was on the otherside of the wall, a innocent wall may look harmless, but sometimes they are deceptive enough to diguise a large drop on ther other side.

plenty of cursing and a trip to the hospital, and ive never tried it again.

i guess the hard part in free running as an adult, is to let go of any doubts and taking the courage to attempt anything, seems the older i get the more restrained i get.

damn aging! only if we could be as reckless as kids the older we get.

anyways i wouldve thought women wouldve had life easier free running, since they wont have the eternal fear for landing legs between a fence or a bollard, without a painful crunch. :p

bah, sos for the lengthy waffle, i suxs at comments.

    Hey Anonymous,

Nice work, all comments appreciated whether long or short. Long comment deserves an equal response :D

Hope you were OK after your tumble and no long-lasting after effects. The clicking ankle and lumpy shin-bone will be with me for quite a while.

This courage in youngsters is very true, though my little 15yr old brother often tries to replicate ny tricks and last time out he landed upside down on the 3rd ramp with his bike on his head - broken collar bone and no more biking for him since getting the fear

As for being reckless when we're older, having no kids helps. When I have kids I think I'll have to show 'em a thing or two but play safe.

LOL - there didn't appear to be any girls doin' this free running and you're right; less fear, though I've still heard 'em complain when wacking the crossbar :ouch: A friend said she was gonna do free running when it first came out, but that was just for show; she won't do it: shame that. Gorgeous Girls free running would be a beautiful sight... :D

Shame I missed that!. I know it would have gone down well here, one of the Brom-ites was fascinated at that ad that was on recently with someone doing Free Running. Hmm, then again maybe it was a good idea we didn't see it!! When I was a kid I used to dare myself to jump off things, now I often find myself at "The Mill" on a little used mezzanine floor looking down over a sea of false ceilings, the urge to run and jump is always there, with the added thrill of not knowing whose desk you're going to end up landing on! Take care on those wheels mate!

Well, Brom-man missed "Jump Britain" and Lever missed that ad with Free Running in it... am intrigued now... which ad was that and how on earth did one miss it?

Hehe, for all the compulsive behaviour experienced in the past I don't think the jump through the floor onto some random desk is worth the spontaneity... there's a 19" monitor in front of me now and the thought of going to A&E to have that removed...

If you take care at "The Mill" I shall be safe on my bike Brom-man :D

Hey Anonymous young lady #1: Good to know you're doing Parkour and keeping your hand in for the ladies :D And if you say you're pretty good then that's v cool, and on the record now too :)

Hey PiPro, nice to hear from ya too :D Sounds like Parkour / FreeRunning is getting some good coverage right now. Best of luck with it too, if you're gonna be a star one day then it's been nice to have had you pop in and say hello :D

The nearest I ever got to Parkour was "garden hopping" on the way back from the pub - but that's another story...

I watched Jump Britain last night (July 24, 2005) on the TV last night. What a fascinating sport! Just beautiful to watch. Wish I was 25 years younger - I would surely try it!
