Prepare to meet thy Doom 3

I didn't mean to...

It just happened...

The paper shredder, intended to destroy sensitive information1, was right next to the games section.

Well, OK, it was 100 yards away, but when the voice of logic & reason says "anything else you need?" it's always a good cue to check your mental list and avoid those annoying moments when you get home and shout "oh, bollocks2, I forgot the XXXX".

So I checked my list.
  • Paper Shredder.
So, yeah, lucky that happened otherwise I'd have got home and had to kick myself, having first shouted "oh, bollocks, I forgot to pickup Doom 3 for the Xbox."

Buy Doom 3 for XboxAnyway, smug with the glow that only occasional self-satisfaction can bring, I went straight to the games section (right next door, remember? ) and grabbed the box at the number 1 slot.

Back at the bat-cave I waited for dusk to fall but then lapsed into a fall, of the sleeping kind, myself and awoke at around 3 in the morning. Darkness. Ideal for playing 18-rated games like Doom 3.

There was a lot of buzz amongst the PC community about this release some months ago, but back then Halo2 was my main priority. I admit to fearing that Doom 3 would break the nostalgic spell that still existed from playing Doom on a DX2 66MHz way back when...
...having a phat smoke before going to work and stepping into the lobby of the corporate HQ, the marble compass on the floor erily reminiscent of a Doom-style pentagram.

Into the lift, doors slid shut. Going up...

...OK, OK, so what happens when the lift stops? Click-click, shotgun ready...

...WTF am I doing? This is work in leafy suburbia not a research facility on planet Mars...
So yeah, there's a lot of history between me and this game - 10 years or more. But sitting with a new copy in 2005, the power of the Xbox and the lights out...

...I need new underpants and a heart bypass.

  1. Apparently ID theft is getting big in this country. It's probably just some big conspiracy theory dreamt-up by paper-shredder companies. But hey I believe the hype, it keeps people in jobs right? ;)

  2. See Bollocks

Ha! I totally followed everything there. I used to play doom and doom 2, but almost exclusivly after midnight until I finished them. Then I'd play deathmatch with my friend across town via a a dial up modem connection all day long.

Jay:LOL, yeah alright it was a little bit convoluted wasn't it? So waddya wanna know about? The blood, the zombies, the head shots?

No towel folding or twisted ankles though LOL :)

    RahX: Spot on dude.

All day via dial-up? That's some going.

Going to work for a corporate at 5pm was a real trip after playing 8 hours of Doom and being stoned outta my face :D

But yeah, I'd recommnend Doom 3 - it grew on me kinda quick. Made me jump too. Very atmospheric - like Half Life and with all the classic elements of Doom and Doom 2 - looking forward to seeing the flaming skulls again :)

Rebekah: LOL You crack me up, though I do worry about the paper shredder being the highlight of your working day... mine's blogging :D

We'll have to compare notes on our shredders... I belive mine is more functional than it is musical...

Until we got cable internet in 98 I had my own phone line, for internet usage. Well that and being a talkative teenager.

I played Doom 3 for weeks, really loved it. Then I got to the level called Hell and couldn't get through it without using some cheats (and then some!) at which point I gave up. If I have to cheat, what's the point? I think they made a bad game if you HAVE to cheat... (or maybe I'm just crap at it, which I don't believe)

RahX: And now you're in the cellphone industry - that figures :D

Steve: That must be the PC version then? Ah, yes it is... you Doom 3 veteran you :)

I'm deliberatley limiting my time on this game - it's better played in total darkness - and I don't get dreams of cross-hairs and extreme violence like I did on Halo2.

But from your experiences back in Aug/Sep, Steve, I can see there's a lot more to go... dogs, spiders, the legendary chainsaw, the BFG... Haha, the BFG... oh that was so much fun in the original Doom...

Looking forward to catching up with you... I wonder if there's much difference twixt Xbox and PC versions...?

Blogs about videogames are blogs I can get into. Doom III for the PC was pretty good, after a while though, you come to expect the demons, and just go around shooting into every dark corner you see. It's scary at first, then it just gets repetitive. Oh well, Half Life 2 was a blessing from the God of all video games.

Speaking of God, you played God of War for the PS2? It's absolutely depraved! One of the best games I've played in a long while.

Looking forward to Jade Empire for the Xbox today, and I've been totally entranced with Splinter Cell: CT. My roommate and I play the co-op missions. So fun.

Okay, I'll stop being a nerd now. Thanks for checking out my page. :)

Paul: Hey Paul how you doing? :)

Yeah, taking it easy on Doom 3 and still to check out Half Life 2 - I gotta admit to once being a big PC player but sitting infront of it 10+ hours a day for work means a few more hours for games is too much. So consoles for games are sort of a break. 12" away monitor for 6' away TV - LOL

Not played God of War. Don't have a PS2, but have room in the collection for one. I might have to check 'em both out at some stage.

And Jade Empire... I not heard of that... and Splinter Cell... not had the chance to play that either. Man, I got a loada catching up to do :D

Wanna play Full Spectrum Warrior at some stage too, wonder what that's like?

    Keep being a geek/nerd, it's always welcome here :D

ÐÇRøçk§: Hey DCRocks :) LOL yeah, there was alot of hacks around then, with people's faces drafted onto monsters and stuff like that. Wow, my memory is vague - shouldn't have smoked so much back then.

D'ya remeber when they were gonna make the X on the top of the Xbox glow? Wow, wish they'd done that - Doom 3 and the eery glow would have been so so cool.

How far you got? I think I'm in Alpha West right now...
