Odiham Castle

So here's the deal...

It's 3 o' clock, Tuesday afternoon, I'm on my own, the sun is shining and I've worked bloody hard this last couple of weeks. So I've totally earned my late lunch today and go off to catch some rays...

Round Hawley Lake (scene of some episodes of "Soldier, Soldier" and a Bond movie - though don't ask me which one) and past the "Crown & Cushion" and the "Mead Hall" and through the woods...

Odiham Castle...into Fleet, passing the Fleet Pond and up onto the Basingstoke Canal. Drift by the "Fox and Hounds" in Church Crookham, the "Barley Mow" in Winchfield, "The Swan" in North Warnborough, the "Water Witch" in Odiham and eventually stop to take shots of Odiham Castle.

Built in the 13th Century, the position of King John's castle at Odiham was chosen because it was half way between Winchester and Windsor (more castles there) and there may have been a building here prior to the castle being built. It was from the site of Odiham Castle that King John set off to pen the Magna Carta at Runnymede in 1215.

Odiham CastleThe French came and stormed the castle in 1216 and after holding out valiantly against hundreds of frogs for a couple of weeks, the stalemate was ended with a truce... and just 12 Brits walked out. How's them for apples?

Odiham Castle was used as a hunting lodge until the 16th century but later fell to ruin... the Basingstoke Canal was then built through the outer perimeter of the castle in around 1788 and passes within a few hundred feet of the remaining flint-constructed keep.

OK, history lesson over.

The route home again passed those 6 wonderful pubs and I was SO tempted to stop for an ale. Or two. But then maybe I'd never have got home. Not today anyway. It was afterall just a lunchtime jolly. Next time somebody had better come with me, it's only a 25 mile round trip, but with beer and a narrow canal towpath involved I dunno...

Whoa! Where did that history lesson come from, you shoulda told me this stuff 3 years ago then I wouldnt have got a E in gcse history!

Imagine if you did go to those 6 pubs, we probably wouldnt have heard from you for a good two weeks. Then you'd be blogging about how you ended up in a dumpster or somefink

Piniyini: LOL Yeah, that history lesson was outta the blue wasn't it?

The thought of "what if" did cross my mind and the outbound journey was approximately 13 miles... so I'd have been that far from home, all beered up and without the energy to pedal home...

Now what if each pub had been visited on the way out and on the way back too... that would be 11/12 pints! Too much. LOL

I've spent some time in that area, a while ago, on-and-off, like. Never knew about Odiham castle. Infact I though Wales had the monopoly on ruined fortified dwellings. I'm just going to have to see your Odiaham castle and raise you something in the next day or so!

Brom-man: OK, was that you, the host or Blogger playing up there? ;)

Odiham castle is one of those little tucked away places without an official historic signpost or anything. It always looked kinda sad on wet and grey days so to see it in the sunchine was nice. Might have to go back in the snow... that'll be interesting :)

So you're gonna visit some Welsh castles and photo them for us? Cool! I was at that Longtown Castle back in April, that was very nice. Good view from the battlements too :) Keep us posted Brom :)

*attempts to be cool with history like the British...* ;) Apparently there are a couple castles around these here parts...see lookee:

    "Gillette's Castle
Designed and Built in 1919 by William Hooker Gillette, a well known actor (the original Sherlock Holmes). Located on a 184 acre estate, this midieval castle overlooks the Connecticut River. The park is open year round. The castle is open 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. daily from May 25th through Oct. 14th."
'Course I haven't been to see it. I have a pretty castle-deficient experience, actually. Maybe you could get me sorted, babes... *big grin* (and don't you DARE call me princess, even though you're itching to...)

My BBFK: LMAO Well, my dear, that must be a fairytale castle indeed, because the only castle in Connecticut I could find was this one.

Hardly medieval is it, aye? ;)

Yeah, I'll sort you out, I'll show you a proper European one... PRiNCESS! :p

OK, you. I *know* that you could find Gillette Castle, you smartass/search engine genius.

However, I would love to see your castle, babes. ;) Especially, since I'm a princess, apparently. *shakes head and makes another mark under the column "number of times to kick Lever's ass"*

Rebekah: LMAO Hey A grade :) Yeah I know what ya mean... history can be boring but doesn't have to be. One teacher, when I was 13, used to make history lessons wicked. But when I moved town I ended up with one that had favourites and treated the rest of us like scum. He out me into the divvy's exam and I got top marks. What a w@nker he was!

Jay: What you wanna live in an old castle without roof or windows? OK, I can see that being cool LOL How about you wait a bit longer and I find you a stately residence with at least something you draw your curtains across?

SFMD: That playground castle is ace isn't it? It just reminds me of my childhood in the seventies for some reason... I bet they're not cheap though =0

Glad you enjoyed the pics; Sun+Blue Skies=Happy people :)

Piniyini: Yeah, maybe I should just delete it when it happens - it's wasting more of their time than mine ;)

Superfan: Of course! Original Chicago House, Acid house, Trance, Techno, Hard House, Jungle, Drum & Bass... none of that flossy lightweight top of the pops clap-clap dance crap :S Why do you ask? Rock, metal, punk, thras, dub, ska, reggae... only good music ;round here girl ;)
