Su Doku

On the train journey back from the beer festival the other week, I endured the smalltalk of a guy who said he had a number of illegitimate children. He proceeded to attempt to impress me with his "philosophy" of refusing to impregnate women of his own race because he regarded them as his "sisters" and presumably wouldn't wish upon them the hardship of single motherhood.

His contempt was matched only by my own for him and my disdain remained firmly under control, despite my inebriated state, only to be eventually replaced by a more publicly palatable facade of sheer indifference for the fact that the next endeavour of conversation was his proud ownership of a BMW...

Whoopee Fucking Do!

However, with the "sister" in the same part of our carriage intensely reading, his observation and susequent exclamation was "Su Doku"... He was racist, sexist, irresponsible and stupid but he did enlighten me to the existence of Su Doku, so he had just 1 everso tiny redeeming quality...

Since then I have thought little of this term, this concept; Su Doku. Admittedly I neither knew much nor cared at all for this apparent phenomena. Until yesterday, that is, when my stepmother presented me with a gift - a Su Doku puzzlebook.

I awoke in the early hours of the morning and glanced at the first page, trying to fill in the blank spaces, failing miserably and putting it down to weariness, and slipped into a fitful slumber.

After sunrise I sought the eraser and started afresh... logically and correctly marking down the placements of all the missing numbers, completing the puzzle and winning the prize of simple self-satisfaction, ameliorating my own mental alertness in preparedness for the day ahead.

And now; on to other more important things, more numbers, more empty boxes to be filled in... 132,069.75 is a BIG number, wouldn't you agree?

    Superfan: LMAO

Afternoon Sef :) Looks like you got your PC sorted afterall... and good on ya for having a half decent lunch - can't have you eating muscle and sinew burgers *bleurgh*

Ah, the guy's actual race is negligible in this, just that he was both racist and sexist and there should be no racists/ sexists/ prejudice full stop. Even the "sister" on the train raised her eyebrows at me in a kind of "he aint my brother" look. God there's some stupid arseholes around, but he did bring my attention to Su Doku... kinda weird story don't ya think? But anyhoo, that's how it transpired... LOL

    Lever
You think that turning you on to Su Doku is a redeeming feature??
    Balls to that.
Its the most heinous crime ever and I'm not just saying that coz I can never finish one.
To echo Superfan, I never got round to the sausage post either but I reckons you best make your own - my personal fave at the mo is pork, apple, cider and sage.
    Yum! Yum!

I don't really like Su Doku.

However, I did sit on a train between two Su Dokuers (dunno if that's a word - I guess it is now...sorry my wordage is occassionally gribbled).

One was a man who had his head two inches from the page and seemed to be slowly writing dozens of tiny numbers into the little boxes as he could carefully manage, and occassionally using the other end of his pencil to erase one of the tiny numbers.

The other was a smartly dressed lady who sat serene and upright and she worked fluidly and quickly through the boxes with a confidant flourish of her pen, swift as hot honey.

I suppressed the schoolboyish urge to nudge the squinting man to my left and point to the answers.

Weirdly, I couldn't help feeling a certain admiration for the Su Doku Jedi and slight disdain for The Helpless Scribbler.

    Judgemental or what?

Sudoku is awesome (I don't much care for the Su Doku spelling). I've been doing it since I became aware of it about 6 months back - I love the fact that it's pure logic, unlike (say) the crossword.

Anyway, you might want to check out these
links for some Sudoku action. I print out the puzzles almost every day.

    blagh. i dunno.

    anyway :D

Johnny Boy: LMAO Ah dude, anything that gets my brain working and away from a PC screen has gotta be good :)

Oh and cheers for the sausage recipe idea - I'm currently doing as you said minus the pork, apple and sage... so cider it is Yay! Brimblecombe's Devon Farmhouse Cider (Farrants Farm, Dunsford, Devon) *hic*

Rebekah: Haha, S'OK. Balls to that it is then. Let us know your most innapropriate usage of the phrase so we can have a larf ;)

Dr. Sky:Hey Dr. Sky, welcome aboard :) I'll get round to asking you how you found us one day, but for now yeah... hello :)

LOL from "Su Dokuers" to "gribbled"... interesting word selection there dude ;) And hapless (I know you said helpless) to Jedi... LOL

Ah, be judgemental, and with a big smile too ;) SuDoku keeps the grey matter churning :D

[-o-] : Ah, nice one dude :) And cheers for the link :) Once I've exhausted this puzzle book I'll definately go there for some daily mind-wrestling. Cheers that man :D

Superfan: Back again? LOL So, what did you get arrested for again?

Restless Angel: Yeah, I did get some "how could you be so tolerant?" questions myself... I was drunk, he was an asshole and it would have been bad to have had to beat him for his sins LOL

Let's hope the CSA (child support agency) and laws of Karma catch up with him hard!

Hyperbudda: Ah, thanks HB, printing & puzzling now ;) Yeah, it took off big here lasat July and like [-o-] says, it's better than the crossword ;) Well, it is for ole Lever nad his limited vocab :)

Kate E: Yep. It's full blown over here - made it mainstream into The Times every day and has become a (quiet) phenomenon ever since...

Superfan: OMG - you're a Mac girl?? Good on ya :) I didn't realise - I know how offended you lot get when we calls ya PC - it's like Political Correctness innit? Like calling someone stupid when they're actually just mentally challenged... OK, computer it is then ;)

My BBFK: Thx babe :) I tried my best to remain calm, not beat him to a pulp and explain that the CSA had a listening device installed in my jacket...

And that smile is a definite winner - your prize - you can take me home this week ;) *

    >> OK, did I miss anybody?

    I hope you missed me!!

I didn't leave nay comments though, I was kinda sulking cos you beat me to a Sudoku post that I was planning... and I never want to be accused of being a copy-cat!!

    ;-)

  • At Tue Sep 20, 04:41:00 PM, Blogger Lever said…

Brom-man: Brom-man, you are always missed :) Infact, now that you're here, at last, another post can be made... I mean, a blog without Brom's comments would be like... erm... would be like... a day with the letters "d", "a" and "y" on the end ;)

  • At Tue Sep 20, 09:22:00 PM, Blogger Brom said…

Er yeah.. I think I understand Lever old mate. It's tired and I'm too late to think.

PS Did you realise that if you text the letters on the "word verification" thing into Walkers you probably won't win an I-Pod!

  • At Wed Sep 21, 09:47:00 AM, Blogger Lever said…

Brom-man: LOL OK :) I see where you get the Walkers thing from - you're right hceekr is too few letters... And think... if they're giving away a $200 prize every 5 minutes... that's like $2400 of their profit they can chip into every hour... that's a LOT of money...

As you know, I have disdain for anything logical, so I think these puzzles may not be for me.

    And yes, I would agree.
