Modern Music is Rubbish

My point?

Why bother buying any new music when there is SO much old material missing from the hallowed collection?

Hawkwind - HawkwindGo forth, obtain second hand records (and CDs). Save the planet. Put cash into the hands of cool record store owners. Dust off your turntable. Dig out that Steve Miller Band vinyl. Do you really want to give money to people who put spy-ware on music CDs like Sony do?

The Mothers of Invention - Just Another Band from L.A.Recently I've been reminiscing and picked up a ton of stuff by Hawkwind, The Mothers of Invention (Frank Zappa), Pink Fairies... and I should catch up on oldies by the likes of Budgie and Poisoned Electrick Head too... Damn, these records I never bought way-back-when are still so good, you just know it's gotta be better than Coldplay Sheesh - Coldplay - My favourite...NOT

The Pink Fairies - Kings of OblivionThere is a glimmer of hope with some of our music making a retro shift with acts like Bloc Party, Kings of Leon and even The Bravery etc... but all that other pop and chart c-RAP... I mean 50 Cent? Damn, did you know that in the UK (by today's exchange rate) he's 28 pence?

Discuss.

ah sort of like i paid "50 Cents" for a neil diamond record at the secondhand vinyl shop?

i concur - they're the only acceptable places really to purchase music but geez-o i've been saying that since i was like 10

me - i've cultivated a pretty rockin' collection if i do say so myself - the many neil's in my collection included -- i love him so much it hurts - i'll have to peruse yours someday though

mothers of invention was a guilty pleasure of mine as a child played mainly to irritate the parental units as were vinyls of moss icon bob dylan and george carlin comedy records

    :D

perchance someday you will post a list of what youve got? i'm really interested in knowing

    happy thanksgiving!

Rebekah: Hey Rebekah, happy thanksgiving :)

LOL 28 pence for vinyl? Cool!

I'm gonna get my linear player out of the loft and plug it in tonight - if it pisses me off I'm going down to the record shop in Aldershot and see if he's got one and a pile of plastic I can play...

I seem to have lost my way, but ocasional jaunts into the real shops remind me where it's really happening - your WOMB CD came from a great place in Camberley called The Rock Box, a true shop if ever there were one :)

Don't tell me... Neil Young, Neil Sedaka, Neil the Seal? OK, I made that last one up :S

OK, when there's time I'll get my list together, though I still didn't get a V in the collection, the Veruca Salt I ordered became unobtainable after I waited 6 weeks for it to be delivered >:| And Voivod's "Nothingface" is pricey...

So true Lever. The wife & I have a pile of vinyl we have carted over from the motherland with us. Some original Hendrix plenty of 80's metal (with a little glam rock thrown in (hey she was young and foolish)) and various other bands your parents never liked you listening too. Where did music go wrong? oh yeah it was those plastic poppers that appeared in the late 80's with their synth beat songs and their 'look at me i was once on a soap opera nobody watched' attitudes. Fookers.

Sadly we dont have a record player just a big pile of vinyl. I get it out every now and then and experiment with it in desperation to hear some good music. The closest i've come was licking The Almightys 'Blood fire & Live' at 33rpm.....man they even taste good.

Keeefer: oh Hendrix... Band of Gypsies... And then "Axis Bold as Love"... I got a '68 pressing o' that somewhere... '80s metal? Tell me there's some Megadeth and "Master o' Puppets" era Metallica...

...OMG Jason & Kylie and all that Pete Waterman shite... it's HIM... he did it... where's my silver bullet, maybe I can save the world if I assassinate him? :S

    Fookers indeed *mean stance*

Haha, The Almighty huh? Rockin! Can't say I've had the pleasure of tasting their vinyl but I did have a Clash LP once with some peanut butter on it...

Rebekah: Bagsy a copy of the cracklin sounds :) I love vinyl - I want a copy of "Neil's Heavy Concept Album" again... somebody help me please... I said "Neil's Heavy Concept Album"... you know? Neil? From "the Young Ones"? Ah, time to go to bed with my new Hawkwind DVD... *sulks*

I think I'm close to converting all my vinyl to CD by purchase of same. However, I do know there is a Hawkwind's "Hall of the mountain grill" left to get along with ELO2. (ELO were still prog in those days!) Oh, and some AlDiMeola, and a synth album called "Switched on bach" which I don't think you can get on CD..damn the list is growing, I'm gonna have to go thru' them again.

  • At Sat Nov 26, 10:39:00 PM, Blogger Brom said…

ohhh you CAN get it on CD, excellent. Oh the great bit is that the original performer was one Walter Carlos, who on later recordings became Wendy Carlos, see what synths do to you... it's all in the knob twiddling!

Brom-man: Excellent - that's what I was doing too Brom :) However, now the turntable is up 'n' running I found some vinyl to mp3 software over at polderbits ;)

The cheapest copy of Hall o' the Mountain Grill is at Blah DVD, it was 5.49 but could be 5.99 now?? And ELO 2... I don't think I ever heard that one... must investigate, cheers :)

LMFAO Bendy Walter, er I mean Wendy did the Tron soundtrack? Well I never, you learn something new everyday ;) Twiddling indeed :S

Poor Walter. Its like my mum used to say 'If you twiddle it too much it will fall off' and i always thought she was talking bollocks

To be honest, dear, I hadn't heard of those oldies/goodies. And I heard a song off the recent Coldplay album that I dug (100% more than Yellow....YAY!)
I also dig record players and was seriously chuffed when my parents bought me one for last year's Christmas present....
Enough about me. I just wanted to add my 2 cents...er....pence. ;)

Jay: I wish I was an inspiration. Truly ;) So what tunes you into there girl?

My BBFK: Well you will have all the time in the world to listen to them at your leisure, my love, and all the other amazing CDs and vinyl too :)

Oooh, record player... awesome :) I was contemplating switching the old linear-tracking Technics for an SL1210... or two ;)

    And 2 cents? Today that'll be, err, 1.16527 pence ;) :) :p

28 pence ROTFL. Doesn't have quite the same ring to it, does it. I'm well into all the new music, and I hardly ever listen to my back catalogue. Even stuff that I used to think was my favourite all sounds very disappointing these days. I've bought stuff on CD that I used to have on vinyl and then wondered why I wasted my money. New Music rocks.

Ah, good that you like new music, EYC, somebody has to ;) Seriously though, what about Nouvelles Vagues? New music, yes, but strong old classics (Joy Division, The Clash, The Cure) in that 50s French Café style... or Kings of Leon... Awesome :)

Mind you, that Rachel Stevens is a looker ;)

RahX: LOL, dude, gimme time OK, I'm working on it ;) Actually I'm ordering 'em now :)

I love Hawkwind, Budgie, The Faries, Dust, Buffalo, Sir Lord Baltimore, Bang.... There's so much good stuff out there. I've been buying music for 20 years, never buy much past 1988. I have a want list over 10,000 items long.

  • At Tue Dec 13, 02:33:00 PM, Blogger Lever said…

Hal Roman: Hi Hal, nothing past '88? That is awesome. Have you got a copy of "Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters" in your collection? And that is some wish list - damn, I should do the same here :)

So how many LPs you got there Hal, plenty I guess? :)

    Modern music is rubbish?

Damn, I'd better give up my career then.
Or is my music classified as modern...

I use vintage tape reel to reels from 1950, harmoniums from the way back o' beyond, violins from a Stradivarious faker, and all manner of real old things...

Mind you old vinyl is sooo cool; my record player of choice is a portable valve french player from the 1950's - it loads into a tiny suitcase with a built in two way speaker...it plays 33's 45's 78's and some other thing; 15's I think...whatever the hey they are.

    Anyone got a 15?

    Best vinyl?
Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds is current favorite...

Still after a CD of Sopwith Camels
"The Miraculous Hump Returns from the Moon"

    Happy Christmas one and all.

Dr. Sky: Modern Music is Rubbish? Did I say that? Oops. Le Lever il est l'agent provocateur, non? ;)

OK OK, it prompts debate though... maybe I missed saying mainstream (downstream?) but now I know Dr. Sky is funky :)

I do like stuff like Labradford, Stars of the Lid, Antenne... seen Prodigy and SOAD this year... so there's still hope for music yet ;)

A 15? Weren't old grammies 15s? The ones with boxes of spare needles? I hjad a friend whose dad had something like that, tres cool indeed :)

WotW is a very good choice but I couldn't find your Sopwith Camels CD for anything less than about $57 !!
