Lever's Book of the Dead

Neil's Book of the DeadIn the last post we were talking about Neil from the Young Ones and I was inspired to go find "Neil's Book of the Dead", something I owned as a kid but somehow lost/had stolen as is the case with all cool things in a young person's life, or did I just have a bunch of shifty friends?? (BTW that was a silent f wink )

So I looked for a cheap 2nd hand copy of this out-of-print tome and found one with somebody in the US. In the description was this odd little credit; "from the estate of the late Greg Shaw"

Intriguing but I think nothing of it. I order "Neil's Book of the Dead". It turns up. I'm so hippy smile

Neil's Book of the DeadAnd there, inside the front cover, an envelope, pressed, at home between the dust cover and the folio page... An inked letter adressed to Greg Shaw, BOMP!, CA 91510 and a phone number for guest list/booking info, with a 25c US stamp and a Los Angeles postmark PM, 17 January 1990. Actually it's not a letter, it's a poster... Blackbird, Lingerie, January 19.

How very interesting...

So I go do some quick research and it only turns out that Greg Shaw is this very cool dude who set up the Bomp! record label, which released recordings by Devo, The Germs, Stiv Bators (of The Dead Boys), he founded the now-defunct "Mojo-Navigator Rock & Roll News" and "Phonograph Record" Magazines, wrote "The Doors on the Road", was manager for the Flamin' Groovies, used the term "Punk" to describe '70s rock 'n' roll before what we now all know and love as "punk" became punk after which he then he called rock 'n' roll "garage", coined the term "power pop", set up the Voxx record label...

Unfortunately Greg Shaw died in October 2004, but you can read all about him here with a TON of info & links to follow if you're so inclined.

I haven't yet found out who/what Blackbird is yet though...

But man, that's a nice and unexpected little piece of history here smile

Hmmm, well I think you had some 'specially shifty friends, however, I can recall having one or two things lifted from me in my childhood. Fortunately, now all your friends are stellar. ;) Oh, and the stealing ended up in you receiving this ultra-cool find in the mail...and nice bit of detective work, BTW.

Wow, that's wild. Are you sure you weren't a librarian in a previous life? I LOVED The Young Ones. It didn't start on TV here until 1985 and then only late at nights. I was in year 10, and a friend who lived near the school we were at and I used to sneak to her house at lunch times and watch it on video that she'd taped. It was great, There was only one other person in our school who we knew of who watched it, and we'd rave about it the next day with him. i have plans to buy it all on DVD (Have we got a video?)

My BBFK: Yep, they were nearly all shifty. People do that when you're kids, it sucks. Even the kids with a good upbringing did shit like that :(

But yeah, all these years later I get Greg Shaw's very own Book of the Dead :D Awesome :D

Rebekah: Thankyou, Reb, there should be more hippies, stand up and be counted all my undercover hippy friends :)

I may just get used books from now on... man, I'm getting thrifty and I love it :)

Mummy/Crit: LOL, erm Librarian, I dunno could have been. May be a good career, nice and quiet, tons of tomes... :)

Ooh, ooh, Young Ones, I just bought the lot on DVD too :) I didn't realise there were only 12 episodes... ah, quality.

Yeah, I can't much remember how/where I was watching it but I always remember my parents hated it. I totally related to Vivian, and yet a bit of Neil too... Ah, good times :)

well (and i'll only tell YOU this sort of thing) i've been practicing my own version of being hippie by way of not having shaven proper places in about 2 months?

    :D

    eh? how about that!?

Rebekah: LOL v cool, I won't ask which is the "proper" place and I'll not say a word to anyone else OK? ;)

The hair on my... er... head is now an inch long I think... was gonna grow it again but it was always such a hassle at that in-between stage :S Ah, it's winter, gotta keep the brain warm ;) :D

Wayhay!! what a great story, and what a great piece of music history to acquire by accident! Nice one mate!

The Young Ones, what an absolutely brilliant piece of TV. Some people didn't get it, I think they were the ones who didn't have at least one friend who were in someway similar to Neil, Viv, Mike and Rick!

Oh no, I've run out of lentils!

Brom-man: Yeah, that's just amazing isn't it? The Bomp! records back catalogue is gonna be doing some trade now :)

LOL I knew a guy who was SO much like Rick (with a silent P) He was a TOTAL leftie and used to shout "fucking pigs" at the cops, then go hide behind bushes whilst the rest of us nearly get arrested >:| Was OK though, our old Trotskyite mate always got his dues!

    LMAO

Vyvyan: "Hey, what's the sauce on these lentils Neil? It taste like garlic and parsley?"

Neil: "I don't know Vyvyan. They were Trish's"

    Rick: "Vyvyan, you are sick."

Vyvyan: "Not as sick as Trish apparently."

as a general rule i think boys look far better with longer hair anyway (although you are quite handsome without it - quite - just ask becky she'll tell you)

    an inch is progress

    i'm proud

    regarding proper places: ;)

Rebekah: I gotta admit that the short hair makes me look like a thug/ conscript/ thicko sometimes. Some people assume that a down-to-the-wood haircut indicates a lack of intelligence, as does the down dress sense and yet there are SO many stupid people in the world that wear suits! LOL

And handsome... Thx, but nah, I don't think I'll ever be that.

So yeah, the thatch is growing again for now... :)

    *shakes head*
OK, I obviously need to step in here.
Nope. All those negative things about "down to the wood" haircuts are completely not right. AT least no one thinks those things here, in the US. And this American thinks you look shag-able with your hair short. Long? I guess, I'll get to see, aye? ;)

My BBFK: LOL Yep, you step in girl ;) Well *I* think people with skinheads look like thickos - take David Beckham for instance. And then when he grows his hair he still look like an eejit.

See what I mean? Nah, me neither LOL

OK, you come run your legs through my hair then ;)

The Young Ones! I had totally forgotten about them. I heard more episodes described than I actually saw, because my best friend's boyfriend (the one my father called "That Junkie") was obsessed and loved to recount them in great detail.

Momvee: Hello Momvee and welcome :) Get yourself down infront o' the box ne day and run through 'em all - they're the 80s revisited, love 'em. I always wanted to live in a Young Ones househhold but ended up in one a bit more like Trainspotting :S

RahX: Yeah, totally... But don't ya just love it when things like that happen? :))

Good detective work, Lever. I think you have enough here to start a series of mystery readers for youth. All you need is a catchy detective name, and a great sidekick.

LOL Thx Jay ;) It'd have to be a Hippy detective agency - what about Summer Comedown and Float Gently?

Still gotta find out about that Blackbird gig though...
