Nuke Silo = Ancient Monument???
So my mate T calls on Saturday and in the conversation mentions he passed by Greenham Common that day. Now for those of you who don't know it RAF Greenham Common is, as the name implies, common land, for use by the people, but commandeered by the RAF for time as an airstrip. It was used in WWII by the US 101st Airborne for glider ops in Normandy 1944, later for the US Strategic Air Command in the '50s for carrying nuclear payloads and later again, from 1980 onwards, for the deployment of cruise missiles, aka NUKES!
Back in the '80s the place was renowned for its women's peace camp and at one stage as many as 300,000 people linked hands around the base in protest against the nuclear missiles being there! Hundreds of people were arrested, as you can imagine. You could also score good weed there, or so I'm told.
So, I went and had a butchers at the place, it's only 30 minutes away, and in the last 6/7 years it has been decomissioned and turned back into natural heathland where nature flourishes, animals once again graze and people come and go; flying kites, walking, biking, watching birds, letting their dogs crap and their kids cycle there. Though that last combination worries me now I've written it :S The peace camp left when the nukes did, so all's well that ends well :)
And I started with Nuke Silo = Ancient Monument??? Yes I did. And here's why I ask the question... These nuclear silos are only 50 years old and yet the site is designated as an "Ancient Monument"!!???

It says "scheduled ancient monument" on the sign... perhaps they're simply declaring their intent to declare it "ancient" as soon as it's eligible, and to prosecute anyone who messes with it in the meantime.
But why go to all the trouble of preserving your atomic-age village green when you can simply do what we Americans do and turn it into luxury housing: http://itotd.com/index.alt?ArticleID=282

LMAO. You're suspicious, just like me. I agree, it doesn't all add up. Maybe we should start a detective agency and hire that parrot that alerted his owner to his adulterous chick. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/4619764.stm)
I think Groucho has a good point though. ;)

Hmm. Well as long as there's no leakage or fallout, or ancient ooze...

Interesting. I guess that means both of my parents are ancient monuments. And my grandparents would probably be fossils or something.

Groucho Castaneda: Hey dude, welcome aboard :)
Could be - maybe to either protect the site from damage, souvenir hunters or squatters (you could park a caravan in those silos or board-up each end...) or maybe it is of some value or there's something under it of historical worth. I dopn't know, it's just weird and 50 years is hardly ancient??? LOL
Missile Silo homes huh? Interesting link, cheers, dude :) I'll try find some pics of them now... Hmm... now that'd be interesting, lot's of garden with it I assume :)
Hey, ;ook, here's another one, www.SiloHome.com... cool, cheers for the headsup :)
My BBFK: LMAO. Yes, you ARE suspicious ;) ;) :p :p LOL
It's weird isn't it? Not exactly old, not exactly a monument and hardly "worshipped" or revered just well interesting. I wonder if "well interesting" is an official reason for slapping monumental status on things?
Haha, I've seen that girl, someone already sent that to me today ;) :*
Jay: Top tip, Jay. Maybe go there after dark to ensure nothing glows green or anything :S Maybe that's why they want people to stay away huh?
The thought did cross my mind of wondering around there on a busy day in an NBC suit with a giger counter... could be fun LOL
Miss Emily: LMAO good point there :) Oh, and welcome BTW :)
Yeah, the missiles only arrived in 1982 or something so even though the base has been nuclear-capable since the 1950s that's like 24 years ago the silos were built I guess. So 24 is potentialy ancient too :o

It will be Ancient in the far far future...and probably still radioactive...
It is a monument to mankind experimenting with things that perhaps he should admit he probably should know a bit more about before even attempting it.
In the meantime, I think fencing it off and incurring 'unlimited fines' is a relatively good way of stopping people getting in, and starting court cases in the future. (The unlimited fine would cover any potential cases...)

Dr. Sky: For sure, and being radioactive makes me shudder... do Amazon sell geiger counters?
Definitely a monument to man's stupidity :)
Those unlimited fines should be imposed for many other crimes so that us taxpayers don't have to pay to keep judges and lawyers in the manner to which they have been accustomed... ;)
