Black Box

Well, after getting all geeky last week and realising my 5 ½ year old desktop PC was really just a wee bit slow with the latest apps, what with trying to run Dreamweaver 8 on 512Mb RAM when it requires at least 1 Gb AND trying to knock up graphics & photos at the same time AND browsing AND getting email AND doing climate change data processing in the background... I couldn't resist the temptation to finally upgrade, using this little list of items I selected from various purveyors of fine electronic componentry...

black box, blue fan

  • Akasa Eclipse-62 black Aluminum Case
  • Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe Motherboard
  • AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 4200+ S939
  • Akasa AK-920 EVO120 Heat Pipe Quiet Processor Fan
  • Seasonic S12 600W Silent ATX2.0 PSU
  • Akasa AK-183-L2B Ultra Quiet 120mm 3pin Fan
  • Akasa AK-174CB-4BLB blue LED 120mm 3pin Fan
  • Vantec 120mm Case Fan Vibration Dampening Kit
  • Vantec Power Supply Vibration Dampening Kit
  • Corsair 4GB DDR XMS3200PT TwinX Ram
  • Asus N6600GT 128Mb graphics card
  • Creative Sound Blaster Audigy SE 7 Audio card
  • Sony Black 1.44Mb Floppy Disk Drive
  • Western Digital Caviar 320Gb SATA150 HDD
  • Pioneer Black IDE DVD+-R/RW Drive
It's a timely replacement for my old 900MHz Athlon so it's not designed to be totally kick-ass awesome... but with a great motherboard, dual core 64 processor, 4Gb RAM, room for twin VGA cards and another 3 RAID drives + 2 external RAID + 3 IDE HDDs + another optical drive and the trusty old Zip drive it's already quite an impressive "little" system with tons of potential.

All black box with just a blue led on the front and a blue LED fan at the back... it's like Chanel's little black dress... with an East German shot putter squeezed into it!

LOL, the dress "vision" is just too horrifying to believe :)

DualCore then? 64bit? 4gb? Planning to run an enterprise SQL server, or exchange system then ? ;-)

Nice setup, guess dreamweaver should fly now. Or you might just have enough for a Java based eclipse IDE ;-)

Red: Hmmm... you're right there, Red, maybe that was a bit too much... I should have just said "classy & understated but actually on steroids" LOL

As for running any server-strength apps, that is a possibility though mainly for learning purposes for now...

I haven't had the chance to install DW8 on the 64 yet but as long as it takes (far) less than 15 seconds to load and FW8 takes (way) under 25 then that'll be an achievement ;) I just have to learn how to network all these machines and boxes together first before transferring all the old data from the 900, then that can be my jukebox i suppose :S

Java based eclipse IDE? Erm, you got me there, I know the RAID is java so there's tons to get my head round but
I'll get there eventually ;) LOL

But Dreamweaver... yep, it is awesome and it's gonna FLY on this new box. So where's your DW sites girl, anything we haven't seen yet?

I'm a card carrying geeky girl, and proud of it. That computer sounds wonderful... Kicks the arse of my sorry old laptop, that's for sure. Is it wrong to love blue LED... I have it on my CD duplicator and it mesmerizes me whenever it's on.

Dreamweaver is loads of fun. I've been messing around with a new website, but have been too busy/lazy to finish her up.

    Congrats on your new baby!

Chrysanthemum: Good on ya geek girl :) Yeah, blue is most definitely the colour - I was even considering pulling the Floppy Disc Drive Apart just to swap the green LED for a blue one just so it all matches up nice... oh bugger, the DVD needs one too...

DW Rocks - it's been the daily fix for ooh, 6 years or more now...

Thx for the congrats on the new baby, BTW, being a dual-core I suppose it's twins ;) LOL

I have never seen such a long list that means so little to me.
Jason asked what kind of laptop I want, and I said "black, i think."

Rebekah: OK willdo. I think I have my life back sometime this weekend so will give you a shout then :)

RahX: *puts you on the growing list of people who will be receving a bib for Christams* LOL Dude, I bet the bits cost less in the US too.

Miss Jay: LOL Well you need an A8-SLi because it's got socket 9393 which allows any of the AMD 64 bit dual core processors in there plus the deluxe version has RAID and allows up to 4GB of RAM which means a bigger case required hence the E-62 which has capacity for the 4 RAID discs and a couple of standard HDDs but as such requires a bit more power hence the 600W PSU... What's that Jay? You seem to have fallen asleep...

Just get the black laptop OK?

Yeah... but can you play "Minesweeper"?

I'm impressed that someone like yergudself who needs a PC for work has not upgraded for such a long time... you are probably like me, if you have a stable platform why risk it by adding or changing to things just for the hell of it. I'm still using win98 and although I've got free lifetime upgrades of Fruity Loops for my music, I'm happy to stay where I am cos it does exactly what I want it to do.

Ok, so if any (looks around nervously) "geeks" are listening, any tips of migrating DNS/WINS/DHCP from one setup to another? aieee. I hate acquisitions.

Need about 6 cheap low spec PCs to create a simulation lab. Need a budget.

I think you could probably play minesweeper in 3D with 5.1 surround sound and photo realistic explosions rendered in real time...

Brom: Erm... LOL I don't actually know but it runs DW8 like a breeze :)

Yeah, the work PC is my personal machine so I did upgrade from crappy Win ME (Windows Yuppie Flu?) to XP Pro quite late then only had to u/g when the recent software dictated so. I'm not keen on updating as the industry dictates except on security issues, otherewise we'd be buying new software every X months and Bill Gates would be the richest man in the world... oh wait...

I downloaded Fruity Loopz a while back... when I have a life I may have to give that a go Brom :) And yeah, keep that 98 system running - that was my fave OS, why did we need 2000/Me/XP/Latehorn(Vista)? - If it aint broke don't fix it !!! LOL

Red: I just had to get someone to set up my file sharing as a temp measure cos I couldn't get it working correctly. Apparently my software firewall was the problem but is redundant due to my hardware firewall setup and was causing no end of problems despite all the correct settings.

As for tips on migration... Hmm... not my strong point at all LOL Though a quick sniff on Google revealed this and this though I suspect something like this is more specific? I wish I could assist here dude but my knowledge in networking is pretty low level> Good luck with the migrate... how many machines you gotta do?

Dr Sky: Yes indeed it could well be a 3D gaming rig at some stage and does 5.1 though it can do 7.1... only I have just a 2.1 setup :(

Maybe I should dig out Battlezone or Half Life and give them a go? Ah, gaming... it would be the end of work and the beginning of a surreal life I reckon... I used to skive old jobs years ago just to play on the SNES... LOL

But wait... Minesweeper 3D you say?
