Calleva Atrebatum

Silchester
February. Rain. At last.
Drive. Silchester, Calleva Atrebatum, 43AD, Roman town.
GoreTex boots, expedition jacket, merino wool fleece, warm hat.
Muddy lanes, Rhododendron tunnels, slippery stiles, soggy fields.
Followed by a horse, barrow of dung. Sheep. Lots of them.
Bulls in another. Small mercies.
Rain. Under pylons, crackles above, gains in pace.
Stream, footbridge, copse of English Larch.
Rose cottage, old brick stables, snakey lanes, holly bushes, footbridge.
Another field, another copse, deer. Run away!
Fields, hedges, stiles, pheasants.
Turnips. Rabbits... were here.
Red post box. Wall Lane. Amphitheatre. Yes!
Hard floor, flint walls, trees too young to have seen the show.
History. Imagination. Visions.
Street. Pond. Church. Graveyard.
Roman Wall. Big Roman Wall. Tons of flint.
Rain. More rain. Perimeter, ancient tracks.
South Gate, West Gate, once thriving, now abandoned, empty, thrice 500 years.
Boots off, boxer engine, engage gears, greenlane.
Slip & slide. Shit ones pants, weak bridge, thanks for the warning.
Home. Dry. Football. Beer.

How was your Sunday? :)

My BBFK: LOL was that you going for the double entry there girl? What did your second post say? Was it rude?

It was nice. Wet, but nice. And I think England's past it's 2 feet of snow season... can't remember when we had THAT much snow in the south.

Rebekah: Cool :) Weekends are getting to be really precious these days. I wish everyday could be Saturday/Sunday *sigh*

And my life interesting? Thx Rebekah, I do my best... It's the little details that make simple things so fascinating :)

I love wet walks and mud. I do not care for barrows of dung.

Miss Jay: Right on. I bet the barrow load of horse plop was gonna go in a bag and be sold as "manure"... where there's muck there's brass as they say over here :)

February. Rain. And lots of it.
You went out walking in that Lever? Are you mad, man? ;-)

    Nice Silchester, isn't it?
I bet you had the place pretty much all to yourself too.

Scrawl: LMAO Mad? No, not at all, it's great walking in the rain :)

Silchester's good, the addition of the walking route through the fields & farms definitely adds to it as otherwise there's not much to see. And yeah, there were only a handful of souls about.

Miss Emily: LOL To experience the rain first makes that beer so much nicer. I'd heartily recommend just going out in a downpour and working up a thirst. Then beer & football, if you like football that is.
