Green Geek

Fancy doing something geeky and green at the same time?

How about the BBC Climate Change Experiment?

BBC Climate change ExperimentThe experiment, the largest climate change experiment ever, is a Met Office model of how they think climate patterns work and it's being run by Oxford University on a distributed-computing network. If you've got a PC and can donate some spare processor power then all you need to do is download the software, install it and then get your own personal set of data and your PC crunches the numbers whilst you're working.

The whole experiment is going to take about 4 months on an average PC (whatever the F that may be?) so be prepared for you processor to get a bit warm and the fan to be busier than usual.

I signed up when there were around 1000 people and the initial goal was get around 10,000 PCs together to have more power than "the world's biggest computer" so when I checked yesterday and saw nearly 35k Brits amidst a total of nearly 45k machines worldwide I thought that was well impressive! Good on ya, people of the world. Maybe we can help provide some credible data to stop muppets like this from simply badmouthing climate science because he gets paid by Exxon Mobil!

There's even a table of top computers and top participants but my 900MHz Athlon 512Mb Ram & 1.7GHz Pentium 2Gb Ram machines aren't anywhere in sight and the 6 year old Athlon is mega slow so I won't even waste my time on hooking up the decrepit Pentium III 733 with 128Mb ram... pathetic :(

I even considered building a custom AMD X2 dual core 4.2GHz PC with 2Gb Ram to see how much data it could crunch too. Not that I'd build a machine just for this experiment right ;) I mean, cummon, I do have to do intense graphics, design & development on a machine that was new in the year 2000. And I can build a PC better than Dell and for half the price I reckon... although I do have to get the bike on the road sometime and MOT the car...

LOL! Reminds me of the SETI@home gang I joined in 1999 as we were all trying to find the fastest "SETI" PC :)

Dell machines are pretty good now, I used to always build my own, and right now I'm typing on a Dell, fantastic digital 17" LCD. I do have a selfbuild next to me with a great Intel mobo, but its nowhere near as quiet as the dell. In my quiet front room, that's important. I need to hear my woofer going for the bass on the ER title music ;-)

    Mary: Very possibly! :)

Red: 1999? Crikey... what, 733Mhz PCs with 256 MB of ram? It was good at the time but now... LOL Interesting to know you were in that network, I did see the SETI project on this system :)

Dell are good, this is the 1.7Ghz Dell with 2G of ram but when I saw a new Dell machine go on eBay yesterday for £500 less than it was on their site and I checked the cost of compomemts and I'm hooked on getting a self-build on the desk next. As for quiet... I always check the Dbs of the fans. The Vantec stealth are nowhere near as quiet as some of the Akasa fans... I think there's an 18db 80mmm fan on there now and the dog-leg vent is in the bin so it's lovely and peaceful :)

Sub, bass... nothing's the same without it, gotta be done!

Did you really just say "Good on ya, people of the world"?

    The whole world?

Did you have a complete breakfast this morning or what?

Miss Jay: LMAO Yes I did.

And the whole world? Well, mainly the people contributing to this experiment :) Being the BBC it's such a British thing so it's good that 135 other countries are in on the game.

Breakfast? What's that? I have taken my protein pill and put my helmet on!

Brom: Now THAT is a cool piece of kit Brom, does it have the glowing red style LCD? My dad had a Sinclair calculator.

Oh, erm... does it have Broadband?

Man my compy is under so much stress I have no cycles to spare. Its sickening how much I do with my compy based on downloading, browsing, uploading, chatting combined. I'm such a dork :P

Sorry for not being around like i used to, i miss all the blogger folks I used to converse with.

RahX: Ah dude, good to see you :) That's cool, if you gotta PC you gotta maximize your use of it, and good to see you're still on the circuit.

We know you're busy so just come back to us when you're settled again, OK?
