Getting High

Up on the RoofI dunno what it is... a head for heights, lofty ambitions or maybe I should have stayed in the cadets and been a pilot, but I have this thing for being high. No, not drunk, stoned or shit-faced, more of an "up on the roof" kinda urge ala "The Drifters"...

Then maybe having lived in a bungalow for the last 7 years it's the simple appreciation of getting a good vista...

Up on the Roof...today, for the first time ever, I climbed up on the roof of my place and took in the view. Such simple pleasures. I can see Farnborough Hill, the highest point in Hampshire from here, built by Thomas Longman, the publisher, then home to Empress Eugénie (de Montijo) the wife of the exiled Napoleon III of France, who is buried in the crypt of St. Michaels Abbey here in Farnborough.

Red ArrowsBut that's not what I came up here for. The Farnborough Airshow is in full swing right now and, although my new camera is not here yet (I blame the French) I still wanted to take some photos. So I snapped away, dissappointed at the current image quality of roaring jets and frustrated that it has taken so long for lazy Parisians to despatch my much-needed digital SLR at a time when it is so desperately needed.

Unfortunately, even if the EOS 350D does arrive tomorrow, there will be no time to use it for aeronautic purposes over the weekend as I need to visit my seriously ill father in East Devon, who is now, thankfully, off the life support and needs his family about him. C'est la vie :)

Anyways, go climb, things look good from up there ;)

I was sorry to read of your father's illness.

But I was delighted to read of the EOS 350D winging its way towards you.

Take care and good luck in the days ahead.

    Di

Wandering Woman: Hey thanks :) I think everything will be OK, I can forego planes for the family for a couple of years I think... the airshow's back in 2008. Unless of course there's a sneaky moment tomorrow... IF the darned camera turns up on time :S

There may be other photgraphic & life-giving moments from the west country the weekened I am sure :)

I found my way here via Dave's blog. I'm afraid of heights - I go all wobbly in the knees, so I will visit your posts and look at your view, if I may. Hope your father is feeling better.

Pauline: Hello Pauline *waves* Ah, via Monsieur CanBush one presumes? :)

I have to admit to not being a big fan of ladders but once you're up there it's not so bad. Yes, that's OK, the rooftop shots are for the benefit those not foolhardy enough to want to follow me up a ladder and onto a tiled roof :S

Thx I hope my father is feeling better too. I will find out tomorrow :)

    *huge warm hug*
Well, Sweets, I'm impressed that amidst all the chaos you still migrated up to the roof for pictures and then combined those with a nice little history of Farnborough to create an interesting entry. Good on you, Babe. And I REALLY wish that I was going with you this weekend...I really like your Dad and I know this will likely be tough for you and him and everyone... *another squeeze*

My BBFK: Thanks my darling :) *hugs you back*

Yeah, it was nice to point out that this little 1000 year old town has got some nuggets of history despite ever-pervasive plans to build flats & supermarkets ontop of everything :S

I wish you were coming down south too. Not just for the family but to get some Devon atmosphere in :) A tent, many mentions of the word bugger and a few local ciders too maybe :)

Nice views! You have a very pretty neighborhhood.

I'm like you, I love a good view.

It's from growing up in the mountains. Or maybe, everyone is like that.

Either way, I look forward to your new camera, too!

Josephine: Yeah, thank you, it is a nice place here - I'd be hard pressed to find a nicer place in Farnborough unless I had double the money :)

Yeah, the height thing is strange - everyone must have it in them, it's just to what degree. Or is it just that "top o' the world" feeling?

I cancelled the camera order today - it didn't arrive in time nor in time for the airshow so I told them where to stick it - names will be named ;)

Rebekah: Yeah, airshow :) Can't go though, so oh no :(

Everybody should have a clamber on their own rooftop... very liberating :) When is Erik gonna hold the ladder for you so you can go snap winter Wyoming for us? :D

Fond of height from the top down, cannot bear to witness height from the bottom up. Hope you and your dad are doing ok, and if not, be strong.

Psst ... I'm whispering because I'm off topic and slightly mortified.

When I was quickly downloading stuff at the expensive hotel computer, I accidently deleted instead of releasing the nice comment you made about Gert's castle photograph ... it wasn't Freudian, truly truly.

Is there any possibility that you could write it again, just when you have some time n' stuff.

    Yours gratefully,
    the mortified one

JVS: It's that moment at the top of the ladder... getting on or getting of that gives me butterflies...

Thanks, JvS, we're doing OK - good people give us extra strength :)

Wandering Woman: LOL OK, will do. That was a great phot of Gert's, I'm just gonna have to remember what I said... Hopefully you will be, er, de-mortified :D LOL

Wow, up on the roof with no mention of a corresponding trip to the ER.
    Oh wait, that's my life.

Sorry to hear about your dad. I hope you visited him real good.
