hmm...i think they are lips from a multidimensional being that we can only see a slice of. and the red is actually color shifted because of the dimension lacking. the true color is really closer to vermillion as opposed to scarlet. not only that i'm am convinced that the owner of these lips has flaming orange red hair. hah, how's that?
actually i believe this is a nautical symbol of some sort but don't know what. ; )
