The Bull & Gate

February 3rd, 2009

When your mates’ band says they’re playing a gig in London on a Sunday night and your Mrs is home from the US for just one week, you just grab the chance with both hands. So me & DJ Chick’n'Rock jumped the train to the capital at 7pm and touched down in Kentish Town just as the snow was starting to settle.

The Bull & Gate, if you’ve not been there, is an excellent little venue about 2 minutes walk from Kentish Town tube station. With a bar at the front of the house and a live stage at the back, it’s a perfect place to rock out on the day of worship.

First up were Swallow Your Pride and what a great noise to kick off the gig with. Although I lost my way with metal for a bit in the ’90s, there was both a Machine Head and Panterra t-shirt on the stage and that’s the sound we were treated to; Heavy & catchy.

Safehouse Theory hit the stage next and certainly made quite an impression. Their sound was very reminiscent of a band who had a similar name before they went big and Becky said they’d certainly go down well in the U.S. – that’s what so many Brit bands want to hear when trying to make it big. (BTW whatever happened to Bush?)

Safehouse Theory were pretty polished. Despite the small stage they certainly had presence and not a shred of ego there; They just got on and enjoyed pumping out hard & heavy rock with some nice catchy melodies and a lot of vocal passion, backed up by beats & fx. Their bassist was particularly excellent and has inspired me to give up playing the 4-string because I haven’t got a hope in hell – I think I’ll just retire into being a rhythm guitarist ;)

And finally, ladies & gentlemen, Demilo. With a good-looking chick on vocals they’re like a younger Republica. Of course a decent voice and some cute tunes does the trick too, so Demilo are candy to both the eyes and ears.

Whilst lead-singer Tess is explaining the meaning to the next song bassist Chris butts in and pipes “It’s about drugs” LOL And after that all their songs seemed to be about drugs! Only kidding ;)

Atheist Bus taking Churchgoers homeNice to see some bodies from Farnborough at the gig and as the clock struck 11 we had to head home that way ourselves… and that’s where the REAL fun began.

Due to the snow above ground the tube train services underground were badly affected. Our tube train was late and when it did turn up it took us to the wrong branch line, so we hopped off at London Bridge at midnight to make another connection.

The Jubilee line was closed completely so we had to walk to Waterloo to catch the 00:58 last train.

After an hour of trudging through snowy London streets, very reminiscent of a Victorian Christmas card we finally made it to our train, which was late in leaving, luckily, because it was now 1:07am.

The 40 minute train journey back to north-east Hampshire took over 2 hours thanks to snow & “points failure” and once back in Farnborough we had to dust off the Subaru and drive home in the snow, finally getting home at 3:30am

What a long old night, but it was fun :)

And the best bit? I took a cheap snapshot of some old London Church looking pretty in the snow. When I got home and downloaded the image… it was only the Atheist Bus infront of Southwark Cathedral! How funny is that?

The TumbleDown Dick

April 10th, 2008

Sign the petition!

Oh woe is me! They shut down the Tumbledown Dick. In fact, this is old news, they shut down the Tumbly back in February.

Tumbledown DickFor those of you who don’t know The Tumbledown, it is (was) the best local pub in the area for live music of the alternative/rock/punk kind. OK, there’s The Agincourt in Camberley and the West End Centre in Aldershot (each 5 miles away) but the Tumbledown was ours. The Tumbledown was Farnborough’s own unique pub.

Farnborough is a very average British small town, population c. 45,000. Apart from Farnborough Abbey, where Napoleon III is buried, and the Farnborough Airshow, there’s not much to write home about other than our once-great music venue The Tumbledown Dick with live bands and the Quarantine Club rock/alt night.

After an environmental health inspection the owners of the Tumbledown Dick, Spirit Group, decided to shut the pub. Now, after literally decades of chronic underinvestment the rumours are that the pub could become a “family friendly” pub… that sends shivers down my spine. All the other “family friendly” pubs in the area are either totally dull and all look the same or the youngest members of the family have to be gone and in bed by 8pm, leaving only the older members of the family to prop up the bar and drink crap lager.

I digress…

The Tumbledown Dick was getting better and better as a live music venue, we even had our eyes on a Smiths tribute band in July and bands booked all the way up until November… until some silly person decided to shut our favourite live music boozer!

If you’re from Farnborough or nearby, if you like your live music, if you ever enjoyed a band at the Tumbledown or ever played there, or like me, you wanted to get your first gig at The Tumbledown… then please please please help out and save this pub before it goes down the pan…

Guildford Ghost Tour

January 8th, 2008

Becky’s sister and her husband have been in England for just over a week now and we’ve been mega busy. Unfortunately muggins here is back at work but there’s just time to say that we did the Ghost Tour of Guildford last night, run by a dear old friend of mine. Guildford’s a fantastic town anyway, so to be shown around in the cold dark night by our hilarious guide was a Monday night well spent.

If you’re ever down our way give us a shout and we’ll do the tour again… we can stop in The Three Pigeons for a pint of Timothy Taylor’s Landlord afterwards if you want…? :)

HNY

January 1st, 2008

We left Ohio and flew to NYC for a couple of days and then touched down in old Blighty on the 30th December, just in time to prep the house for the arrival of Becky’s sister and her husband. Being a little jet-lagged ourselves we spent the best part of 12 hours labouring to get the house ready before dumping ourselves in our new spa bath at 1:30am on New Years Eve to drink a well-earned glass of cold white wine…

And when we woke up at 7am (not in the bath) we dragged ourselves off to Gatwick to pick up our jet-lagged people, drive them around the English countryside, through Guildford and Farnham and finally home to Farnborough. After dropping off suitcases we dragged our travel-weary relatives through the shops for a few more errands until I saw their eyes glaze over with tiredness… we took them home and let them get a well-earned rest at 2pm.

So by 8pm we were in the Crown & Cushion, Minley (you know, our local pub just on the other side of the forest) where we dropped off the Subaru and met my bro, his girlfriend and my step mum. William & Julie, landlord and landlady of the aforementioned drinking establishment, put on quite a party… there was a Thai curry buffet, good music, good people and a curiously-shaped ice sculpture through which alcohol was poured to dribble out of the bell-shaped end… Becky took a good mouthful, so be prepared for an edit here and photos to follow…

I’m off to cycle through the wet woods around Hawley Lake and retrieve the Subaru from the Crown & Cushion car park… HaPPY NeW YeaR :D

The Thatch Doctors

February 19th, 2007

I hadn’t been down “The Thatched Cottage” in years. It’s one of those local pubs where the crowd from the Totland Estate started going when they closed down that den of iniquity, that tavern of ill repute, that wonderful old shitehole the Prince Louis.

And Becky hadn’t been there either, so when our neighbour offered to take us down “The Thatch” for a pint or three we jumped at the chance; what better to do on a Sunday evening when the kids are safely chained up ’round a friend’s house?

The Thatched Cottage

No sooner had we crossed the threshold and ducked under the old oak beams, we were drinking Adnam’s Broadside and drawn into the pub quiz with the promise of prizes for the winning team and the best team name. After quips about trimming Becky’s thatch and other silly suggestions we settled on the name “The Thatch Doctors” even though between a web designer, an aviation engineer and a medical writer there was only one PhD.

After 30 questions about pop music, boxers, motorways and the make-up of atoms, we waited with baited breath…

…and found out that we’d won on 24 points.

No time for another pint, unfortunately, but we did bag a nice bottle of Semillon Chardonnay.

Go Thatch Doctors. Go Thatched Cottage.
