Na Zdrowie!

April 26th, 2008

KrakowIncase you didn’t know, we’re in Krakow, Polska. Cheers!

Everyone’s asleep as it’s silly o’clock in the morning but I’m awake, just.

Yeah, we got here on Thursday AM. A quick flight from LGW to Krakow’s closest airport and then a 40 min minibus ride through the Eastern European countryside to this old city. It’s nice. I like Poland. Growing up with all those films of the eastern borders of Europe it fits exactly with the vision.

As soon as we got to Krakow we hit our hotel and booked a taxi, via a perogi restaurant, to Wieliczka. There’s a huge salt mine there, a trip recommended by a good friend who missed the opportunity last time he was here but made sure we stayed on track :) The salt mines are pretty impressive… down 60+ flights of stairs and into 100+ miles of caves… some of them hand-carved and beyond belief… there are chapels down here and a vast underground church…

On Friday we visited Auschwitz; Not your usual holiday destination but really interesting nonetheless. I’m not a big fan of human suffering and abject misery, especially on such a grand scale, but I’m sure the blazing sunshine made the experience a whole lot more palatable. I’d recommend a visit if you’re passing this way. The sheer scale of the Birkenau camp is food for thought…

So tomorrow (later this morning, rather) we tour the city itself… Krakow, the Wawel Dragon, the castle… Dobranoc!

Rebekah: Talking of protests, we saw one of those on the Sunday in Krakow… the right-wingers were waiting in Krakow’s town square for the approaching gay rights/feminism march thingy… there were TONS of police there, all tooled up in riot gear with shot guns and fire extinguishers etc…

But I digress, you can protest all you like missy, but we’re coming to get you one day and drag you along on one of our little adventures… the whole Krakow trip including flight, hotel and 2x tours was only 500 bucks a person :)

Yeah, I got pictures, about 300 of the blooming things… just where to upload them… I got time on my hands now the girls have flown the nest back to the US for a month :(

Wow. I haven’t been keeping up with you folks properly. I want to see pics too. Did you knwo that Na Zdrowie is also what you say in Russian when you down your shot of vodka? I hope you don’t miss your girls too much. My beloved has just been away for 3½ weeks, it’s very annoying.

Mummy/Crit: OK, I’ll get some pics up when I get an opportunity and let ya know :)

Yeah, Na Zdrowie is “Cheers” in Polish too and there’s a lot of other similarities because they’re both Slavic languages, so Tak, Nie and Do widzenia are words I know that are so close…

Mate, I miss the girls terribly, but we’ve got Skype and built-in cams on both our (recently) new laptops :D

Three weeks is a long time; the girls will be away at least 4 weeks, so ‘m with you on this one, M/C :)

    *big sigh*

Are there any Polish people left in Poland? They all seem to be over here. :D

I used to work with some Poles and they were teaching me a few words, but I didn’t get very far.

The caves sound amazing, those I’d like to see.

bulbboy: LOL Yeah, from the state of some of the houses around Krakow it looks like all the brickies & plasterers have gone west!

Polish is an alright language once you get over the (over)abundance of consonants and, as with all foreigners, they love it when you give the language a go.

But those caves, man, they’re something else…

I just like how you said “silly o’clock in the morning.” very funny.
Once, I was visiting a friend and he had hung a tambourine on the wall where the clock used to be. I laughed and commented how I kept looking at the tambourine to check the time.
“and what did it say?” he asked
So, I responded “the jingle jangle morning…”

    LMFAO

Erik: Yo dude, we miss you too ;) :D

    Rebekah: Yeah, samo samo :)

Vermont sounds cool, being New England it’s gotta be cool… just like olde Englande just… new, right? :D

Aw… Becky’s birthday is October 12th. That’s so cool of you to think about her :) Yeah, we dunno when they’re back, it’s what you get for an international relationship and having to jump through the hoops of visas and stuff… but at least we let you guys stay here for 6 months a t a time not a measly 3 months ;)

Running naked down the freeway… so that’s why you call it the freeway :D

argh!! I knew it was October! Too many people’s birthdays to remember … well … so i’m wondering if i should send it to her in the US now???

you people gotta stay in one place :P

that IS why I would call it a “free”way, however, I may be the only person who supports that. But who knows … and yes, New England is VERY cool. they had naked people riding bikes for some cause or another while we were down there, speaking of naked… :D

    nudity is always awesome.
